Melandri expects Ducati decision this week

Marco Melandri says he is likely to learn if he will race for Ducati at the Czech Grand Prix this week.

The Italian has endured a dismal season with Ducati following his switch from the Honda Gresini satellite team.

Melandri has scored 32 points in ten races, while teammate Casey Stoner has managed 187, including four victories.

Ducati said Melandri's performance in the last two races in Germany and Laguna Seca would be crucial when deciding on the rider's future. The Italian fell in Germany and finished in 16th position in the USA.

Melandri says he would like to complete the season, but he is aware that he could lose his ride, with Sete Gibernau tipped as the favourite to replace him after having tested for the team twice.

"This week will be decisive to understand whether I'll be able to complete the season on the saddle of my Ducati, or if Gibernau will take my place," Melandri wrote on his website.

"Well, I'd like to complete it: I think in these last two races a step forward was taken, and more could be forthcoming. In any case, I must really thank all the guys in my team, because this first part of the season has been hard for me as it's been for them.

"I can say that we've all been good at always staying clear-minded, even when things were disastrous: no one ever lost control and the relationships have remained very balanced. I'd truly like to get on the podium at least once for their satisfaction."

link-http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/69409

Opinions on Spies

He finished about where i thought he would.I think top 10 for a wild card is very respectful. It did effect him tremendously on his Superbike. It appeared from the beginning of the SB race he was still in GP mode, which was whacking the throttle mid turn,a no no in Superbike racing. His bike was stepping out on him on every corner.By the time he reverted back to SB style,Mladin was gone and he settled in for an easy 2nd place for damage control.Doing a Gp race and then 30 minutes later doing SB would have to be pretty rough since they are NOTHING alike, except for having 2 wheels.

Linky

A meeting with journalists, with the prospect of two further years with Yamaha ahead of him. Valentimo Rossi is happy with his choice, but doesn't hide the fact that other contacts, this time under a veil of silence, did in effect take place.
"Yes, let's say the possibilities to change were there. It could have been Honda but it could even have been Ducati who I've had contact with. The second option could even have been interesting.
It's an Italian brand, fascinating, and I have immense admiration for Filippo Preziosi who I know very well. In the end I chose to stay here, where I have an exceptional team and good relationships. Trying to beat Stoner with his own bike wouldn't have been very original. We need to beat him like this, with the Yamaha"

Negotiations which you carried out on your own?
"Well yes. Now yes. But I didn't miss my manager. I even gave myself a nice percentage as my own manager!" Valentino added jokingly.

Two years are a long time. Don't you think you might find other stimuli elsewhere?
"I had the possibility to choose. I chose serenely for two years because I'm very happy here and I think that I can find other stimuli with Yamaha. I'd like to race for at least two more years. Then maybe, if I'm still having fun, even another two!"

What do you think of Pedrosa's going back home?
"I imagine he did well. Over here if you're not ok it's really tough. I know something about it. The michelins he had I'm told would have made him struggle, so rather than come in twelfth I understand that he might have preferred to give it a miss."

Tomorrow's race on the attack? Or will you be happy with a second place?
"No, I wouldn't sign up for a second place. We're not too badly sorted. No, I still wouldn't settle for a second place. I'd certainly want to do better than that single 3rd I've managed here."

West where to from here?

Based on Wests lack of performance for the last 11 rounds, its not a stretch to presume he'll be fired at the end of 08.

tinfoil hat/crystal ball time

I don't see Ant racing the year out with Kawasaki, in fact a break from Kawasaki could happen before Brno. Ducati have sacked Melandri and they may keep him around to chew gas and tyres but essentially he's useless. Ducati need someone who can potentially take points away from Rossi and that will never happen with Melandri. Kawasaki have made murmurs about Melandri riding the bike this season, possibly a third bike.

Now I didn't expect Westy to leave (get the boot) until seasons end, but I recent crash from WSS rider Fabien Foret has put him out of action for 3 months, pretty much the rest of the season. Ant's manager should be on the phone to Yamaha WSS team manager (Zeelenberg) begging for the chance to ride that bike at the next round, if not the round after. If Ant could get out of his Kawasaki contract (to me this wouldn't seem too difficult given the fact he's mud), Melandri could step in (ducati running gibernau), Ant would be free to ride a bike closer to his level of expertise.

To me the pieces fit nicely, unfortunately it probably won't happen and we'll get to see both guys at the back in Brno.

AntFan would do you think?

onboard race telemetry, Rossi Stoner??

It was really cool showing the race telemetry during the race. But one thing stood out on that race..that was that Rossi was ahead and would still be behind casey on the throttle response. Casey was way early on the gas(i think thats the reason you see the bike bucking cause its trying to get traction) and would just pin the throttle wide open while leaned over on mid corner. hopefully yamaha can upgrade their package for Brno race. Great race by both guys.
