He can't race 'cos it's against the rules. A team picks the rider for the weekend by noon day 1, ie Suzi picked Capi before he crashed in FP2.

All the press bullshit about Spies deciding not to 'cos of the weather/indy practise/lost track time is exactly what it says on the tin - bullshit.

Actually, I'm trying a new approach. I realize 99.999999999% of everything he says is just simply trolling. I've tagged him as much. But I want to see if there is a shred of reason and an ability to articulate behind that brain of Pinky. So in this case, yes, I actually would like to know why he thinks Spies, after missing two practices; on an already short schedule is "chicken shit" for not rushing into a very dangerous and technically demanding sport. I'm wondering if he can debate and carry a point with reasonable and logical articulation. (Am I crazy? --maybe) I suppose I just want to give him a chance to turn from his two-line dig quips and carry an intelligent conversation.

Im going to be honest,im disappointed in Spies.Even if he did miss a couple of hours of practice,the track time would be invaluable for next year if for track knowledge alone.I said on another forum i thought this was all about being named the rider for Assen and then having it jerked.I dont care if he runs last,which would be pretty hard to do with Melandri out there cruising,just getting a little knowledge of the track would be worth the weekend.

But in further analysis of the situation, I thought, well, racing at this level isn't exactly a thing one should take lightly or rush. We often throw around this phrase: "these guys put their lives on the line every time they race." Well it actually has truth. Consider the risks involved in being behind the learning curve a day behind, and throw in again factors of uncertainty. For us sitting here as American fans, of course we want to see him out there and may be disappointed in his decision. We may even question his meddle. But if you put yourself in his shoes, think of the professionalism and restrain he has shown in perhaps NOT jumping/rushing himself into a situation that could be potentially very dangerous. Remember, he is already tagged to ride some more wild cards. On top of that, he has a very important Indy test just days from now. Consider that this is more important, to have a good showing at a home GP, than the track time vs. risk in such short notice.


So yes, I’m not happy he isn’t gonna have a go at Assen. And yes, I might be tempted to question his commitment to and advancement in his career, its has crossed my mind that perhaps he as been hanging around complacent-mladin to much and making him shy from testing himself internationally); but then I began to think about the bigger picture. I think it was a wise decision. Perhaps he too was leaning to jump at the opportunity, but cooler heads prevail.

Or then again, maybe Pinky is right and he is just “chicken shit”.

Anybody else want to chime in one way or the other?

Spies is in an interesting predicament.
If he qualifies at Assen after just one practice session on a track he hasn't raced on and struggles big time, then he may think it will affect his prospects on gaining a full time ride next year.
I have no doubt if Ben already had a deal for 2009 inked, he would be riding at Assen today.
Personally I think he should just go for it. He still has 2 wildcard rides at Laguna Seca and Indy to impress his prospective bosses. But on the other hand if he does reasonable well here, then his stocks rise further.

Spies is in Assen to race. If Capirossi had've said that his fracture was making riding impossible Spies could have, according to the rules, stepped in before the second practise. As it was it was FP2 and too late. So he didn't even have a decision to make. He's a racer and would've been on the bike if possible. It sounds like everyone started with the same setup they had in Donnington so he could have got going right away one practise behind or not. I am still not happy that they only have one bike on the grid and don't buy the line the arm wasn't a factor in the crash.

stoner was still fast at the last few tracks but what is giving him the edge now is the electronics upgrade how can you deny that when its in front of you on paper and proven in his laptimes?
