I dont think we are to far out of seeing tricks like that. It has been done the other way around. What I mean is flipping the bike while the rider remains vertical. I have seen this done two ways, with the bike under the rider barrel roll style. And by swinging the bike by one handle bar off to the side (the easier way of the two.) But with everyone using foam pits and ski/pool jumps for training, the progression has been insane. The front flip superman last night was impressive, he through his body first and then let the bike catch up. I think with a little practice, into the water, he could front flip over the bike and catch it(like you are saying). That would be the way to do it over doing a backflip. That way you could push off to get away from the bike and initiate the flip while still holding on to the bars to keep the bike stationary in the air. Plus you would come back around hands first and could grab the bike and put it back where it goes. Next time I go to Rays MTB Park I will try to talk some of my friends to try it into a foam pit. I cant do a front flip or I would think about trying it myself. The key word being "think."
What I love about Bmx and MX jumping is how it's constantly evolving. I just gave you a scenario and you morphed it into multiple variations I had never thought about.
I grew up with my room pasted with Eddie Fiola pics. That was the pinnacle for me and the shit he was doing then is like warm up for these dudes.
While mx seems a little more limited with the weight factor it seems that BMX still has a lot of room to grow
