Is it not the teams decision to release their driver into a space that actually exists?

--------------------
To consider Kevin Schwantz an equal rider to Rainey, Doohan and Lawson is to overrate him. His entertainment value, popularity and legendary status can be compared (and is arguably superior) to those he rode against, but he achieved significantly less on the track.

Yes! But, if you see, the driver of the blue car, Danica could have easily have slowed to give Briscoe the space. She didn't have anyone close enough behind her to make any difference.

Of course both people could have taken actions that did not lead to an accident, but a system where drivers pull out regardless of whats coming leaving other drivers to emergency stop in the pitlane is far more complicated then having a team member just look for a space.

Agree. And to have to do an emergency stop in the pit lane is dangerous - hence pit lane speed limits. In F1 it'd the job of the lollipop man - is there an equivalent for the Indy 500? The mirrors are insufficient to tell the driver the full story hence it should be down to the team as to when a driver is allowed to leave his box. As far as who's fault this incident was, Patrick could have slowed, but at the end of the day she probably wasn't looking for cars exiting their pit boxes, nor should she have been expected to do so. Hence it was the fault of Briscoe's team IMO.

Yes, but the guy is the right front tire changer, and in Ryan Briscoe's case, his team engineer which is Roger Penske. They make the call. The lollipop man just guides the car in.

Hard to see how it can be anybody's fault except briscoe's crew and him to a lesser extent; I presume thay have speed limiters in the pits as in F1 so danica can't have been going too fast and she was coming in rather than trying to pass him in the pits?

For me from that video it looks like Ryan Briscoe and his team caused the incident as he should have waited until there was space to exit his pit box.

Another question:

Do you condon her actions after the incident? That interview is just a part of what did happen, but she did go to the Penkse pit of the Briscoe team during the race.
